Frequently Asked Questions

Common Woodworking Questions

What are router templates used for in woodworking?

Router templates help guide a router to create precise and repeatable shapes in wood. Woodworkers commonly use templates when making cutting boards, charcuterie boards, trays, handles, and other decorative woodworking projects. Using a template allows you to produce consistent shapes without measuring or drawing every project by hand.

What is the difference between acrylic and MDF router templates

Both acrylic and MDF router templates are commonly used in woodworking. Acrylic templates are transparent and durable, which makes them easy to align with grain patterns and layouts. MDF templates are a popular option for many projects and are often used when woodworkers want a more economical template or prefer a solid material with a thicker edge.

Are router templates good for beginner woodworkers?

Yes. Router templates are one of the easiest ways for beginners to create professional looking woodworking projects. They simplify the process of shaping boards and help guide the router so you can focus on making smooth cuts instead of measuring complex shapes.

What router bits should I use with router templates?

Most router templates are used with either a flush trim router bit or a pattern bit. These bits have a bearing that follows the edge of the template while the cutting edge shapes the wood. Using a sharp router bit will produce cleaner edges and require less sanding.

How do you secure a router template to wood?

Router templates are typically secured using double sided woodworking tape, clamps, or small brad nails. Properly securing the template prevents movement while routing and helps ensure accurate results.

What type of projects can I make with router templates?

Router templates are used for many woodworking projects, including:

  • Cutting boards
  • Charcuterie boards
  • Serving trays
  • Crafts shapes
  • Decorative woodworking pieces
  • Woodworking Projects like furniture, tables bases, architectural designs.

Templates help woodworkers create consistent shapes when producing multiple pieces.

Can router templates be reused for multiple projects

Yes. Both acrylic and MDF router templates can be reused for many projects when used properly. Many woodworkers keep templates in their shop so they can quickly recreate favorite project designs. MDF templates degrade over time with moisture and use. Acrylic templates do not break down over time.

Epoxy Forms and Mold Questions

What's the difference between HDPE molds and Silicone Molds

HDPE is a hard, rigid plastic material that doesn't bend easily. They are best used for tables, boards, deep casting, and custom epoxy projects. They have a highly slick face which does not allow epoxy or glues to stick making them great for epoxy forms.

Silicone molds are made of a flexible silicone material. Because they are flexible, they can be made for high detailed molds and allow for much more shape versus HDPE forms.

Silicone won't last as long as HDPE but allows for more detail. HDPE lasts much longer due to the material, but only allows for simple designs clean shape projects.

How many times can I reuse the molds?

Our HDPE forms are built from durable HDPE material, allowing for hundreds to thousands of projects if cared for properly. We have customers in the 1500+ boards in one form.

Our Silicone Molds are made with the highest quality silicone on the market and can yeild 40-50+ projects if cared for properly. The heat generated from epoxy curing and the flexibility of the silicone in high detail molds leads to less pours if not properly controlled.

Will epoxy stick to the mold?

Epoxy does not permanently bond to HDPE or silicone, which is why it’s ideal for reusable forms. Once cured, your piece should release cleanly with minimal effort.

Do I need to use a mold release?

Our forms are designed to be reusable without mold release, but using a light release agent can:

  • Extend the life of your form

  • Make demolding easier

  • Help reduce cleanup time
Can I use these molds for river tables or large pours?

Yes — our forms are designed specifically for large epoxy projects like:

  • River tables

  • Cutting boards

  • Charcuterie boards

Just make sure you’re using the correct epoxy for your pour depth.

How long should I wait before removing my project?

Cure time depends on your epoxy, but most projects are ready to demold in 24–72 hours. Always follow your epoxy manufacturer’s guidelines for best results.

How do I clean the molds after use?

Cleanup is simple:

  • Peel off any leftover epoxy

  • Wipe down with a clean cloth

  • Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the surface
